AMLSN-ASM FLLM Partnership

Capacity building, especially on strengthening the managerial competences for members of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), is one of the priority activities in AMLSN’s strategic plan document. As a high-level profession, AMLSN partnered with American Society for Microbiology (ASM) through a funding support from US-Centre for Disease Control. The eligible applicants for the Training of Trainers (TOT) workshop through an online advertorial in 2016, were shortlisted and those finally enlisted are Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLS) at the managerial levels from both public and the private sector across the country.

Fifty (50) qualified Medical Laboratory Scientists at the management levels participated in the Training. The first set consisted of 25 MLS working in Southern part of Nigeria. They were trained in Lagos from 15th to 26th August, 2016. The second group comprised 25 MLS working in Northern part of Nigeria. They were trained in Abuja from 20th to 30th March, 2017.

In all, the trainees went through intensive training in 8 modules namely:

Organizational Structure and Management

2. Manager or Leader: Learn to be both

3. Making the most of Human Resources

4. Communication and Conflict Resolution Meetings

5. Leading a Successful team

6. Problem Solving and Decision Making

7. Financial Management

8. Strategic Planning

Each module had incorporated in it exercises and vital tools for hands-on approach to the objectives of the training.

The first week of the training had the facilitators training participants. The second week had the participants teaching back the modules to participants and facilitators. Competence Assessment of participants was based on marks obtained from pre-test, post-test and teach-back sessions.

The Lagos training was facilitated by the following resource persons:

1. Dr (Mrs) Callista Osuocha-Team Lead

2. Dr (Mrs) Lawrena Okoro

3. Dr Ajayi David

4. Mr Obinna Nnadozie

5. Mrs Noyen Azubike

The Abuja training on the order hand was anchored by the following faculties:

1. Mrs Stella Udo- Team Lead

2. Mr Livinus Ibiang

3. Mrs Ifeoma Ogbukagu

It is expedient to note that all the facilitators of the trainings in Abuja and Lagos were MLS who have in-depth skills and knowledge in leadership and laboratory management. They gave a good account of themselves throughout the training.

The AMLSN e-learning desk ably led by the e-learning Project Co-ordinator-Mr Godwin Ihemekpen and his team, effectively co-ordinated the entire process.

At the closing ceremony attended by invited dignitaries and some elders of the profession, the entire faculty was handed over to AMLSN for sustainability, ownership and follow-up actions which will involve training other medical laboratory managers, directors, etc nationwide to scale-up the achievement of the set goals.
